Anyone experienced veneajelu in Finland? Worth adding to a travel plan?

I have been reading about Finnish summer activities lately, and I keep coming across the word veneajelu. At first, I thought it was just another tourist term, but the more I look into it, the more it feels like a very local, everyday experience rather than something flashy.

From what I understand, veneajelu is basically going out on the water in a boat — but not in a rushed or commercial way. It seems more about slowing down, enjoying the lake or sea, and just being present. Finns appear to treat it as a normal part of summer life, whether it’s a short evening ride, a weekend trip to a nearby island, or just floating around with family.

What I find interesting is that veneajelu doesn’t sound like it requires special skills or luxury boats. Even simple rowboats or small motorboats are enough. That makes it feel more authentic and less touristy compared to typical sightseeing cruises.

  • Has anyone here actually tried veneajelu while visiting Finland?

  • Did you rent a boat, go with locals, or join a small tour?

I’m curious whether it’s something a solo traveler can enjoy easily or if it’s better with company.

Would love to hear real experiences rather than guidebook descriptions.
